Surat, which produces nearly 40% of India's synthetic fabric output, is witnessing a rapid adoption of artificial intelligence-powered defect detection technology across its weaving and processing units.
Several large manufacturers in the Surat textile cluster have deployed machine vision systems that use deep learning algorithms to identify weaving defects, yarn breaks, stains and pattern irregularities in real time on high-speed looms and processing lines.
Leading technology providers report that these systems — which use high-resolution cameras combined with AI inference engines — can detect defects as small as 0.3mm at fabric speeds of up to 120 metres per minute, something human inspectors cannot reliably achieve at production speeds.
"We have reduced our fabric rejection rate from 4.2% to under 1.8% since deploying the system eight months ago. The return on investment has been exceptional," said the production head at one of Surat's leading polyester fabric manufacturers.
The technology is also reducing the labour burden on quality control departments, where skilled checkers are increasingly difficult to find and retain.
The Gujarat government's Textile Policy 2025 includes a dedicated subsidy for Industry 4.0 adoption in the textile sector, covering 25% of the capital cost of approved automation and AI systems up to ₹1 crore per unit.
Industry observers note that Surat's willingness to adopt technology quickly is giving its synthetic textile sector a competitive edge over clusters in China and South Korea, particularly in polyester-cotton blends and jacquard fabrics.
